California’s Governor Brown has a Busy October – New Laws Impacting Employers in 2018.

HR Done Right has been following several employment legislative bills over the last few months that have now been signed by the Governor.

SB 63 – New Parent Leave Act. This bill extends 12 weeks of job-protected parental leave for employees who work for companies with 20 to 49.

AB 168 - Prohibits all employers from seeking salary history information about an applicant for employment and requires an employer to provide the pay scale for a position to an applicant upon reasonable request.

AB 450 – Employers can no longer voluntarily consent to federal Immigration Control Enforcement (ICE) inspections, but will require a warrant or subpoena along with other pre-and post-inspection requirements.

AB 1008 – California Fair Chance Act. This bill governs when and what types of criminal conviction history information employers may consider regarding job applicants.

California employers should begin preparing for these new laws now. Review current recruiting practices to ensure employment applications, interview questions and pre-hire processes take into account these new laws. HR Done Right will continue to monitor the New Parent Leave Act and will include clarification on policy updates and implementation for affected employers as more information becomes available.
