In the United States, 40.3 million people are affected by a substance use disorder, according to the National Institute on Drugs and Addiction (NIDA) 2024 Fact Sheet. With that large of a sum, there is a high probability that some of your employees may be stricken by drug or alcohol disorders.

The Bottom Line: If you have employees who are affected by substance use disorders, your workplace could be negatively affected. Hindered employee well-being, low productivity, and high absenteeism are just a few examples of how substance use disorders could impact your workplace. Fortunately, you can utilize strategies to support your affected workforce that can benefit both the employees and the organization.

How can you support your employees affected by substance use disorders?

Empathy and Compassion – Cultivate a workplace culture where your employees feel supported. When employees feel supported, they are more likely to seek help and engage in treatment, which can lead to positive outcomes.

Provide Resources – Encourage your employees to utilize your Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), which are voluntary programs that can offer short-term counseling for substance use disorders and even referrals for further care.

Time Off – Depending on the size of your organization, you may need to allow your employees to take time off to attend a rehabilitation program. Furthermore, you can offer reasonable accommodations for them to take time off for care, use sick days, or provide other support to help them through their recovery.

Addressing substance use disorders within the workplace can lead to a healthier, more productive work environment and demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of employees. For more guidance, reach out to our consulting team.
